A dangerous tree is a serious liability. Whether it is leaning toward your house, riddled with decay or showing signs of imminent failure, prompt action is essential. Plumridge Tree Experts provides safe, professional dangerous tree removal across the Brussels region and Walloon Brabant.

What makes a tree dangerous?

Not every large or old tree is dangerous. Specific signs indicate genuine structural risk:

  • Significant lean: a tree that has recently shifted from its original position, often with heaved soil on the opposite side.
  • Major trunk cracks: vertical splits or horizontal fractures in the main stem are signs of imminent failure.
  • Extensive internal decay: fungi such as Ganoderma, Meripilus or Inonotus indicate advanced wood decomposition.
  • Root damage: construction work, excavation or soil compaction can sever critical anchoring roots.
  • Dead crown: a tree with significant crown dieback may be dying from the top down and losing structural wood.
  • Co-dominant stems with included bark: a weak union that can split apart under wind or snow load.
  • Storm damage: partially uprooted trees, split trunks or hung-up branches after a storm.

If you observe any of these signs, do not wait. Contact a qualified arborist immediately.

Our dangerous tree removal process

1. Rapid risk assessment

A Plumridge arborist visits urgently to evaluate the tree. We determine:

  • The nature and severity of the defect.
  • The likely failure mode (whole-tree, major limb, stem snap).
  • The targets at risk (house, road, pedestrians, vehicles).
  • Whether the tree can be made safe by pruning or bracing, or whether removal is the only option.

We only recommend removal when it is genuinely necessary.

2. Method selection

Dangerous trees demand specialised felling techniques:

  • Sectional dismantling: the tree is taken apart piece by piece from the top down, each section lowered on ropes. This is the standard method when structures, roads or other trees are nearby.
  • Crane-assisted removal: for severely compromised trees too dangerous to climb, we bring in a crane to lift sections away.
  • Controlled directional felling: only where space permits and the tree’s integrity allows a ground-level cut.

3. Securing the area

Before any work begins, we establish an exclusion zone around the tree. If the tree is near a public road, we coordinate with the local municipality and police if necessary.

4. Execution

Our crew, equipped with appropriate PPE and rigging hardware, proceeds with the dismantling. Communication between climber and ground crew is constant. Every cut is planned.

5. Stump grinding and clean-up

Once the tree is down, we chip all branchwood and remove trunk sections. Stump grinding is available to remove the stump below ground level, leaving the site ready for replanting or landscaping.

Do you need a permit to remove a dangerous tree?

In the Brussels-Capital Region, planning permission is normally required to fell a standard tree (circumference > 40 cm at 1.50 m). However, an exception exists for trees presenting an immediate danger. In such cases:

  • The tree can be removed without prior permission.
  • Photographic evidence of the danger should be documented before felling.
  • The municipality must be informed after the event.
  • A regularisation application may be submitted retrospectively.

In the Walloon Region, the CoDT provides similar provisions for dangerous trees. Plumridge handles all documentation and communication with the authorities.

Common dangerous tree situations in Brussels

  • Storm-damaged poplars: fast-growing and brittle, poplars are among the most frequent failure species in Belgium.
  • Ash trees with ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus): this fungal disease is now widespread and causes progressive crown death and brittle wood.
  • Horse chestnuts with bleeding canker: bacterial infection weakening the trunk.
  • Construction-damaged trees: root severance during building works destabilises trees that may not show symptoms for years.
  • Old conifers in rear gardens: once small, now 25 metres tall and swaying in every storm.

Signs you should call an arborist immediately

  • Fungal fruiting bodies (brackets, mushrooms) growing from the base or trunk.
  • A sudden lean that was not there before.
  • Cracks in the trunk, especially if they are opening visibly.
  • A large branch has fallen — often a warning sign that more will follow.
  • The tree is making creaking or cracking sounds in wind.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can you remove a dangerous tree?

For genuinely urgent cases — a tree leaning on a house, blocking a road, or at risk of imminent collapse — we aim to attend the same day or the next morning. A quote is provided on site.

Can a dangerous tree ever be saved?

Sometimes, yes. If the defect is localised (a single hazardous limb, for example), targeted pruning or cabling may make the tree safe without removal. We always explore alternatives before recommending felling.

Who pays for removing a dangerous tree?

The tree owner is responsible for its safety. If a dangerous tree damages a neighbour’s property, the owner may be liable. Check your home insurance — many Belgian policies cover tree removal after storm damage.

What happens to the wood after removal?

Branchwood is chipped. Trunk sections can be cut into firewood logs if you wish, or we remove everything. All green waste is recycled responsibly.
